Alpine meadows give way to crystal-clear glacial lakes as narrow-gauge and cog railways climb to the breathtaking snow-capped mountain peaks of the Jungfrau and the Matterhorn. Paddle steamers ease their way across stunning Lake Geneva and beautiful Lake Lucerne, calling at picture postcard villages and charming medieval towns. Switzerland benefits from marvellous scenery and the fabulous fusion of German, French and Italian cultures into a Swiss mix of precision, style and comfort.
Wherever you choose to visit in Switzerland, it is the most enjoyable country to travel around thanks to the seamless and super-efficient public transport system. There are many scenic trains which give you the opportunity to sit back, relax and soak up the enchanting landscapes and awesome views. Our holidays to Switzerland will give you the opportunity to experience some or all of the following trains; the famous Glacier Express which takes you to the ‘roof of the world’ on the world’s ‘slowest’ Express train as it crosses 291 bridges and glides through 91 tunnels, the equally-impressive Bernina Express which passes over graceful viaducts, through galleries hewn into the sheer rock and alongside rushing mountain streams, the captivating Golden Panoramic Express which climbs through the Bernese Oberland and past flower-bedecked characterful chalets from Montreux to Lucerne or the quaint Centovalli railway which trundles across a ‘hundred valleys’ on its way to Locarno on gorgeous Lake Maggiore.
We had not undertaken continental rail travel before, so we had some concerns about things that could go wrong. However, the whole travel plan went like clockwork. All trains and taxis were on time, booked seats were as they should be and food and accommodation along the way was all to a high standard.
We were very impressed with the Hotel Canal Grande, it fitted the bill perfectly. Lovely hotel, charming staff and great location. We absolutely loved Venice and felt that the first class rail trip to and from it was a real luxury, well-paced and via interesting locations (Zurich and Montreux).
Our side trip to Lake Garda as a separate arrangement also fitted in well with our trip.
